Digging resumes at burial site that has yielded ancient brains TITUSVILLE (AP) Archaeologists say they'll dig in again today in their search for skeletons in an ancient Indian burial site that already has yielded nine skulls, some 1 holding well-preserved brain tissue. The shallow pond near here also has provided hundreds of human bones and tools made from animal bones, some of them between 7,500 and 8,000 years old, said David Dickel, director of the 14-archaeologist team from Florida State University.

The Tallahassee scientists arrived last week to prepare the site for excavation, and construction crews were surveying and mapping the pond and readying trailers the team will call home base until January. The find of the brains in the pond in 1984 was described as a bonanza, in part because tissue inside them contained DNA, the genetic Gunplay game fatal to student in UF fraternity GAINESVILLE (AP) A 20- year-old University of Florida sophom*ore shot and killed himself while playing Russian roulette, university police said. John Watts Owens of Miami died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at Shands Hospital, two hours after he shot himself while in his room at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house, university police said. Police said there was one witness, a friend who was with Owens.

The friend, who was not identified, told investigators that Tribune photos by BRITT LAUGHLIN Brains were found in the Indian burial site that were estimated to be thousands of years old. blueprint of life. Also, the tissue was considered the best-preserved ever found. White stakes have been placed to mark the areas where crews worked on two previous digs at the site, about 15 miles west of the Kennedy Space Center's shuttle launch pad. Workers using a backhoe have removed about 8 feet of peat from the top of the pond area where archaeologist will work.

"It's still pretty messy right now," Dickel said, standing on a board set down to keep workers the two of them had been drinking and playing Russian roulette with a revolver. Fraternity members told investigators Owens had been playing Russian roulette on and off that day, police said. The game is commonly played with a revolver whose cylinder contains only one bullet. A player spins the cylinder, aims the gun at his head and, gambling that the cylinder is empty, pulls the trigger. "All I can tell you is everybody here is shaken up about it," fraternity President Chuck Thompson said.

No charges had been filed, and none were anticipated, University Police Chief Everett Stevens said. An autopsy will also be performed by the medical examiner. from sinking into the soft ground. The area will be divided into 6-by-6-foot squares that different teams will excavate, said the 38- year-old archaeologist. Dickel said he hopes the fivemonth dig will prove as productive as it has in the past two years, during which time researchers have found most their artifacts and bones buried some 10 to 12 feet below the bottom of the pond.

The team hopes to unearth even more this year to aid their quest of learning how the Indian tribe lived, Dickel said. "The bigger the sample, the more reliable our study," he said. The public should be able to visit the site after Oct. 16, although the digging will be in progress, he said. The site was first discovered in 1982 by construction crews preparing to build a housing subdivision.

Swimmer reported missing out in bay A 50-year-old Tampa man was missing Sunday evening after he had difficulty swimming in Tampa Bay earlier that afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The incident occurred at 2 p.m. when the man, whose identity was not released, and a group of friends aboard a 40-foot sailboat dropped anchor to go swimming, said Petty Officer Stan Fifield. They were about three miles northwest of Apollo Beach near the main shipping channel, Fifield said.

The victim was having trouble swimming, and was being helped back to the boat by another swimmer. But the rescuer apparently lost grip and the victim sank, Fifield said..
