University info

St. John's University is a metropolitan university based in New York City, with campuses in Queens and Manhattan, along with international campuses and locations in Rome, Italy; Paris, France; and Limerick, Ireland.

The university's Catholic and Vincentian heritage aim to help students succeed in their chosen field of study, but also as valuable members of society who make service a priority. One of the university's core values is respect, defined as "a courteous regard for all people whose diversity is embraced and shared in learning, teaching, and service to others within the university community and beyond."

There are over 100 undergraduate programs and more than 65 graduate degrees, all of which are led by expert faculty and taught in state-of-the-art facilities. The university also has a strong network of 195,000+ alumni.

Extensive support services help students adjust to and thrive in university life and beyond. All St. John's University students are given the opportunity to earn a degree, participate in service learning, and graduate with a bright future.

International students are welcomed at St. John's. Robust programs help them adjust to life in the US and prosper in their chosen field.

While St. John's University is an institution that provides a caring and safe environment for students and one that also holds community and charity values close at heart, the priority is always providing students with the best education possible to enable them to pursue their chosen career and succeed.

As such, students can expect to be taught using state-of-the-art resources by faculty experts in their respective fields. Ninety-two percent of the full-time faculty have a doctorate or other terminal degree, ensuring their extensive knowledge. They are also experienced educators, able to take their own understanding and shape it in a way that brings subjects to life for students.

Through the quality teaching of St. John's faculty, students can embark on incredible internship opportunities, including the US Secret Service, Morgan Stanley, the New York Mets, Sony, and Madison Square Garden.

St. John's University has six schools and colleges, each specializing in a particular area. They are:

  • St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • The School of Education
  • The Peter J. Tobin College of Business
  • College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
  • The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies
  • School of Law

Students will find a range of majors and programs. Each department is chaired by highly regarded faculty within the field. Between them, these departments deliver and constantly develop a suite of innovative, impactful and relevant taught and research programmes. Students will have the opportunity to grapple with the most current challenges and questions in their field, work closely with their peers and supervisors, and prepare for a successful career after they graduate.

Students seeking to apply to an undergraduate program at St. John's are required to submit 4 academic years of transcripts from their high school/secondary school or equivalent, along with any national examination results. Students can also add an essay or a recommendation letter to their application, although these are only mandatory for pharmacy applications. Transfer applicants must also submit a course-by-course NACES member evaluation of their post-secondary study.

They must also be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language.

There are three pathways available to academically admissible international students:

  • Students with a TOEFL score of 80+, IELTS of 6.5+, Duolingo of 105+, or SAT Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing score of 440+ can apply for their course as normal.
  • Students with a TOEFL score of 61-79, IELTS of 6.0, Duolingo of 90-100, or SAT Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing score of 400-430 can apply for a full-time undergraduate degree but will also take English as a credit-bearing elective.
  • Students with TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores (or none of these scores) lower than the ranges listed above can apply for conditional admission and move on to earn their academic degree upon successful completion of the English Language Institute.

Graduate school applicants are required to submit an online application, transcripts from all secondary institutions, NACES course-by-course evaluation with grade point average calculation, and TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo scores for countries not on our exempt list. Most programs also require a resume, essay, and letters of recommendation.

St. John's University is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities students need for their educational journey to be successful. Classrooms and other buildings are contemporary and comfortable, while featuring all the resources and tools students need to learn.

There are multiple libraries where students can access an incredible range of physical and digital learning resources, while the campus store allows students to purchase essential texts along with other necessities.

The university's Queens campus has several residence halls that are situated close to classrooms and offer a friendly community atmosphere. Support is also available for students who wish to find non-university housing. Plus, students can enjoy an extensive range of dining options, including casual or quick-bite venues, with some national chains represented on campus.

While international students will be required to provide evidence of their ability to fund their tuition to be granted a study visa, that doesn't mean they are exempt from additional financial aid options.

Indeed, there are a wide range of scholarships available at St. John's for all students, which can lighten the financial burden and allow them to focus more on their academic studies.

More than USD 360 million in financial aid was awarded in the last academic year to undergraduate students. Most graduate students are considered for academic scholarship at the time of admission. The university also offers graduate assistantships that provide full or partial tuition. More information on graduate scholarships can be found on the university website.

Students can explore the full range of scholarships and other funding options through the university's website. There are also financial aid options and funded awards available through external organizations.

A successful university must continuously strive for excellence and cannot become complacent, and St. John's University exemplifies this with its approach to developing not just its students, but the institution itself. One such example is the St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, currently being built on the Queens, NY, campus and scheduled to open in Fall 2024. It will offer cutting-edge facilities and house the university's new Bachelor of Science degree program in Nursing.

The university also continues its work to modernize all its existing facilities, an effort which was recently recognized as it was listed in the Princeton Review's annual summary of the most environmentally responsible colleges. It's the only school in the New York City area to be included in the list of top 50 "green" colleges.

Funding is essential for the university's future success. St. John's has been the recipient of significant donations from alumni and friends of the university—ensuring a continued path of innovation and development.

Since its inception in 1998, the annual President's Dinner has been a celebration of what makes St. John's University unique—the vibrant combination of scholarship and service. For more than 150 years, the university has been "faithful to the mission," committed to extending the opportunity for a superior academic education to deserving students regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Funds raised from the President's Dinner are used to support scholarship assistance for students who, because of economic burdens, might otherwise be unable to realize their dream of a St. John's education. In the past 24 years, the President's Dinner has raised more than $48 million in scholarship support for St. John's students.
