all of the cuts to explanations of the cards as they get played is really great, makes it super watchable, speaking as someone who's never played. Wouldn't mind more content of this!

Gotta say, Wizards did a more impressive job on their promotion than Disney did. Sent a whole-ass starter kit, playmats and sleeves for you guys to show off, instead of just having you guys go "PLAY LORCANA"

I've played this game since 2008 and it still warms my heart to see people getting into the game that's brought so much joy into my life.
Despite what my feelings of Wotc may be.

Love this game, but fun fact they used to give these starter decks away for free. A local store gave me about 20 of them to start up a magic club at a school I was volunteering at.

What I love most about this grudge match is the fact it's based on not making eachother tea

Instead of going to commander I think the group should use a “Game Night” kit. Boxed set of 5 prebuilt decks in each colour that are new player friendly. These are what I used to teach my kids magic and they look good on the game shelf.

To all new players. Honestly the best product for beginners are the jumpstart sets (2020 and 2022). You just grab 2 out of 24 boosters and make a 40 cards deck. This way you have an insane replayability value

There's a shed load of mtg content these days, love to see a well known channel bringing the basics to the screen, so many new people to the game and this is the best way to learn 🙏🏻

Learning about broken wings being in your hand at 57:37 literally broke my heart for you Dom.
I feel like you could have won if you'd removed Stasis Field from Ancient Imperiosaur instead of summoning Chomping Kavu... but in the end it was still a very entertaining match to watch, love to see the passion behind learning a new card game!

I bought this exact starter kit to teach my friends how to play magic and I think this set is very good for that in particular. They're very simple decks to introduce people to the game, but also have some genuinely good cards like silverback elder and shivan devastator that can be used to build better decks as you get more into the game. Nice to see them using these here.

34:41 - wait a second, the Siege Veteran's death trigger doesn't trigger on itself. The card says "whenever *another* nontoken soldier dies..." And in my understanding, "another" means a card other than itself. No other nontoken soldier under his control died during that turn, so i don't think that ability should have triggered

One night at Western Oregon Wargamer club in Portland, I was playing a board game, Nuke War with 4 others, when a person walked in that I had only seen a couple times before at the club. In his hands was a large bag. Inside the bag were cards. They were not colored and had hand drawn pictures and there was a typed set of rules. He asked the 5 of us to try out this game that he he was developing.I was not impressed and did not see it as being something that I found interesting (D&D and chit/Historical games). After playing the game he wanted to known if any of us would be interested in investing 5000.00 in this project. I did not for the reasons stated earlier. The man was Richard Garfield and those cards were the prototype Magic cards. Been kicking myself ever since.

The tea-based ad was already hilarious, even before it led into an actual Magic match.

Slight note on the die. The ones that come with Magic the Gathering sets are called spin down dice and they are laid out differently than a gaming d20. On a spin down die, the numbers are all sequentially ordered so that you can easily roll between numbers instead of having to flip it around and find the next one.

I was really surprised by the lack of any synergy in Laurie's deck. Red blue can totally work together, they just didn't pick cards that do.

I was wondering why I enjoyed this episode so much more than recent BGC episodes, and I figured it out: the talking heads. They add so much to a game by letting people share their thought process privately. Please bring them back more often!

I feel like Magic Archenemy would be the perfect way for NRB to play Magic with a larger group. You have three players working as a team each with their own deck but taking their turns together vs one Dom playing a machiavalian villan with an extra deck of evil schemes that allow them to try to fend off the other three players singlehanded.

I actually have to say this was a great representation of what it means to play Magic.

Enjoyed this video a lot more than I though I was going to do. The way it was edited made it simple to follow and super watchable. I would love to see a rematch or even a larger 4 player game.

Really fun watch, been close to two decades since I played Magic but this made me want to pick it up again

One little thing I don't think they cover in the video is the difference between Instant cards and Sorcery cards. Both are "non-permanent" (i.e. once they resolve you put them in your graveyard), but Sorcery cards can only be played during your turn (tying into the phrase "activate only as a sorcery" that some card abilities have, meaning you can only use those abilities during your turn).
Instants, on the other hand, can be played at any time as long as you have the mana to cast them. Because of this, they're most often used to disrupt an opponent's play during their turn, like how Laurie played that Instant card to deal 5 damage to Dom's creature when Dom attacked him.

As someone who played CCGs back in school, and knowing how expensive they can get, I'm not getting into another, but I can appreciate this is a good game. A friend coincidentally brought his cards over the other day and allowed me to beat him with a pure green deck. We then played 4 player and I played pure white and was stuck with one land the entire game. That deck really suffered with no card draw.

I started playing mtg in 95 but fell off in the early oughts. But I remember fondly green/white heal/elf decks. Also that plastic sheath around new cards are impossible to open.😂

Love/hate magic, been playing for years, so it's cool to see this.

This was fun to watch! Selesnya (Green + White) is my favourite starter deck to play on MTG Arena (which is free, by the way!)
It has a lot of growing creatures but is very weak to things that kill one thing. I think the Orzhov (White + Black) starter deck is very good.
Dom did a pretty common thing I'm guilty of too, which is focusing on protecting your creatures while playing an aggressive deck. You want to keep attacking your opponent so they can't build up better defences the way Laurie managed to do. If Dom kept attacking, then yeah, his elephant would die, but it'd take out a lot of stuff on Laurie's side that later won him the game! Risk is a big part of the game~
Laurie did well estimating Dom's threat, since his deck was better at drawing extra cards (so would do better long-term) and he just needed to survive the big damage burst from Dom. Which he did!
Also, yes, Dom's deck _did_ have more than one soldier, we literally saw one in the intro. XD Glad they had fun!

you guys did a great job explaining everything! I don't know modern magic, I'm in Dom's position where I played some half a lifetime ago but don't recognise a lot of the keywords. Very easy to follow and good fun, thanks NRB crew

I adore this game, and this was a terrific introduction for new players. It would be nice to have a few more shots of both sides of the battlefield to keep track of everything. Also if you plan to do any constructed formats, pauper is a very fun and inexpensive way to play.

Idea: House Rules with Magic or 40K. Play the games normally and then throw in ridiculous and hillarious challenges.

I'd love to see a commander game with Laurie, Dom, Sullivan, and Blair I think it would be a fun game.

I've been waiting for NRB to finally play a game of Magic. I was not disappointed, but I was surprised Dom didn't play any kind of Blue Control. As a Dragon obsessive, I loved how the game ended.

Its refreshing to see more simple and fun mtg game like this. The excitement when play card and see what the card do. Not much tap this then do another million things. How about another tournament but special mtg game and the winner can challenge the lord of the board, like before special tournament
