Het rollenspel Dungeons & Dragons is een wereldwijd fenomeen en bestaat al sinds 1974. Met zo'n leeftijd had het al lang vergeten kunnen zijn, maar dat maakt niet uit, het wordt regelmatig bijgewerkt en heeft al verschillende keren zijn weg naar het witte doek gevonden. Het spel van Gary Gygax en Dave Arneson heeft zelfs een van de populairste Netflix-series geïnspireerd...
Een beetje woordenschat
Allereerst moeten we het hebben over de Franse titel 'Donjons & Dragons'. Zonder een grondige kennis van de taal van Shakespeare zouden we het kunnen zien als een onschuldige vertaling van de Engelse titel 'Dungeons & Dragons'. Maar als je het spel speelt, merk je al snel dat het niet echt over dungeons gaat, de beroemde torens die middeleeuwse kastelen sieren.
In feite verwijst het Engelse woord 'dungeon' naar een oubliette, een soort gevangenis waarin mensen werden gegooid die je wilde laten verdwijnen, zonder ze direct te doden. (Maar in het echte leven schijnen kerkers gewoon kelders te zijn en is de mythe van gevangenissen pas later uitgevonden... maar laat maar, laten we teruggaan naar onze dromen!)
De Franse vertaling wilde gewoon de alliteratie behouden met een typisch middeleeuwse term die begint met een 'D' om 'draken' te vergezellen.
Maar het wordt lastig als hij ook nog goede mensen moet doden om zichzelf te beschermen. En nog meer als hij zijn verstand verliest.
Middeleeuwse fantasie
Het spel, uitgegeven door TSR (Tactical Studies Rumes - opgericht door de auteurs zelf) in 1974, speelt zich af in een fantasiewereld. Hoewel nieuwkomers het misschien zien als 'Lord of the Rings', komt de inspiratie in werkelijkheid voornamelijk van middeleeuwse legenden (King Arthur, Beowulf) en talloze fictieschrijvers.
De tweede grote inspiratiebron komt van een spel van Gary Gigax, een wargame genaamd Chainmail. Dit middeleeuwse oorlogsspel met miniaturen op schaal 1:20 bevatte regels voor massale gevechten en werd uitgebreid met regels voor individuele gevechten. Het ging vergezeld van enkele fantasieteksten.

Een steeds meer bevolkte wereld
De wereld van Dungeons & Dragons wordt steeds meer bevolkt met personages van veel verschillende soorten. In het begin moest je het doen met krijgers, magiërs en priesters. Daarna kwamen monniken, druïden, dieven en paladijnen. Later kwamen er trollen, elfen, tovenaars en nog veel meer.
De grote aantrekkingskracht van het spel, en wat het tot zo'n groot succes heeft gemaakt, is dat het rekening houdt met individuele personages, hun eigenschappen en hun ontwikkeling.
Een korte opmerking: we moesten wachten tot de 3e editie van het spel, in 2000, om de beroemde d20 te zien verschijnen, de 20-zijdige veelvlakkige dobbelsteen. Deze wordt gebruikt om acties en conflicten op te lossen. Vóór deze specifieke dobbelsteen moesten veel acties worden opgelost volgens een systeem van regels.
Op het scherm in de jaren 1980
In 1983 werd de animatieserie "Dungeons & Dragons", in het Frans ook bekend als "Le Sourire du dragon", uitgebracht. Deze iconische serie, gemaakt door Kevin Paul Coates en Dennis Marks, volgt de avonturen van een groep van zes tieners die na een dag op de kermis terechtkomen in de fantastische wereld van Dungeons & Dragons. Hun reis neemt hen mee op een reeks epische en spannende avonturen, waarin ze het moeten opnemen tegen angstaanjagende draken, complexe puzzels moeten oplossen en het moeten opnemen tegen de krachten van het kwaad. De animatieserie werd geprezen om zijn levendige verbeelding en aangrijpende actie en hielp het Dungeons & Dragons-rollenspeluniversum te populariseren bij een breed publiek. Het wekte de interesse voor fantasiewerelden en avonturenverhalen bij jong en oud.
Op het scherm in de jaren 80
Sinds 2016 heeft het Dungeons & Dragons-universum weer aan belangstelling gewonnen, vooral dankzij een razend populaire Netflix-serie: 'Stranger Things'. Deze iconische serie, gemaakt door de Duffer Brothers, dompelt kijkers onder in de jaren 80 en laat een groep kinderen zien die samenkomen om het beroemde rollenspel te spelen. De invloed van D&D op de populaire cultuur werd ook onderstreept door zijn eerste verschijning in Steven Spielbergs film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" uit 1982.
Deze serie, waarvan het 5e seizoen gepland staat voor 2024 of 2025, heeft de interesse in dit mythische spel weer aangewakkerd en zijn positie in de wereld van bordspellen en entertainment versterkt. Met zijn unieke mix van fantasie, avontuur en verbeelding blijft Dungeons & Dragons spelers over de hele wereld boeien en biedt het een ongeëvenaarde spelervaring sinds de eerste editie in 1974.

Het universum van het spel is al vier keer bewerkt voor het witte doek, door Courtney Solomon (2000), Gerry Lively (2005 en 2012) en het duo Jonathan Goldstein en John Francis Daley (2023). Deze laatste film, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honour of Thieves", is bedoeld als een reboot van de franchise. Het moet gezegd worden dat de eerste drie films nooit echt een breed publiek wisten aan te spreken. De film uit 2023 wordt gezien als sympathieker, komischer en eerlijker.
