I mean I don't see them spend the draft capital for Humphry/Dickerson/Myers if they sign Mack, maybe they can get the D3 kid with the mullet from Canada lol. He's probably a top 100 pick as well. I guess they could spend a late rd pick on Empey to be the future center with our new QB in Wilson Alex Mack-Signed with 49ers | Page 4 (1)

I would. There's numerous quality options that will be available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. 49ers have to jump on one of those guys. Center is especially crucial to this offense and trotting out random scrub after random scrub isn't the answer anyone is looking for. It has been the single biggest weakness on the OL ever since Richburg got hurt.

And yes Garland is very much a garbage center, people need to stop making excuses for him and stop settling for mediocrity at such an important position. Once Richburg went out, the 49ers stopped being able to handle any sort of pressure from the interior. We saw a preview of the SB in the Atlanta game where Grady Jarrett threw Garland around like a rag doll. He's not a NFL caliber center, not as a starter or as a backup.

So you think SF will use a 2nd rd pick for Humphry/Dickerson/Myers because that's what it will cost to get one of them. Who in the late 3rd? I don't see a huge list of solid centers? Maybe the kid from BYU late day 3.

Garland was the 8th overall center last yr, tied with Hudson. He most certainly isn't trash (graded out higher than Mack actually). At the very least he's a high end backup. Who's making excuses? He wasn't bad at all. Trotting out a plethora of crap at QBs is much worse IMO. No one is making Garland the starter in this situation.

Mack who has missed 2 games in 6 yrs, allows you do upgrade elsewhere. You can get a EDGE rusher worth a damn. You can get a CB worth a damn. You can use that 2nd rd pick to move up in the draft....instead of drafting a kid who's gonna ride the bench all yr.

all that said if they can find a IOL that can play RG and center I'm all for it...I wouldn't hold my breath on them drafting a IOL in the 2nd if they get Mack. We will see.

I mean how much money to do think Garland will cost? He's getting back money. Mack isn't gonna break the bank either, at this stage he's gonna choose were he wants to play and he's said SF makes a ton of sense for him.

He is going to cost a good sum more than a rookie....and we need every penny. People have to stop thinking this is a normal offseason. It is going to be really tight. We need to get the most dollar value out of everything. If it is a position where we can possibly get a rookie contract in there over even a median priced vet and get the reasonably close performance, that has to be how we go. Offensive line is a good target for rookie depth, so are corners you can get good value there and save some money for places where it is harder to hit the ground running. Say we are 2-3 million shy from getting Warner locked up or bringing Trent Williams back?....Garland on the pine over a rookie isnt worth losing a premium talent. Or say we draft a young athletic kid to play slot corner and that is the difference between keeping Borne or having to keep Trent Taylor? Pennies man....counting pennies is going to be everything this offseason.

Get Mack, lose Sherman. I'll be fine with that outcome.

What do you think he's gonna get? Seriously? He was on a 1 yr $800k contract this past yr. what get gets double that? $1.6M. That a freaking steal for a backup who knows the scheme like him.

What premium talent are you talking about? IMO
if Mack is signed he's the starter for at least 2 yrs. you're not spending a top 50 pick for a dude to ride the pine.

I mean isn't the point of riding the pine is to learn from Mack. With our luck, most likely he'll start playing sooner than later. With that said, top 50 seems too high unless he's a C that can play guard. I'd rather spend the 3rd rounder on a C.

So you want a top 50 pick to ride the pine for a couple yrs? I mean if we're losing on these players you're gonna want some meaningful snaps from a rookie I'd imagine.

I'm cool if it's a day 3 pick that can learn. I'll I'm saying is signing a vet like Mack allows you to be more flexible. They aren't forced to draft a center. Garland is a cheap backup, that can start if need be. He's not as bad as some people in here think.

All of this. It's about time we need to trim the fat. Players that don't belong on this team especially with its injury history should be out. We get injured more than any team in the NFL so we need our back ups not to play like garbage at the most important positions. So having good depth at those few positions is far more important to our team. Garland sucks, bottom line if he's starting again due to injury we are in trouble

Far harsher than I was on Garland, but I am mostly on board with this. I still have Garland on the team, backing up all the interior OL positions, but that's behind McKivitz and whoever we end hopefully end up drafting, and this doesn't include the starters at LG-C-RG.

This looks to be a done deal. It is the most likely outside FA to join the 49ers. The need is there, the coach-player relationship is there, the desire to play in SF is there, and the cost is acceptable. Sign Mack and draft a C/G in the first 3 rounds to play next to Mack and back him up.

Resign Trent and beef up McGlinchey. We are in a good place!

The best position for Garland to be in when it comes to the 49ers is retirement.
