"I think it´s the future for the Assyrian music but I also think that the best way to promote/sell CDs is at gigs and I really hope that the Assyrian people start to support us/singers/artists so we can produce even better work in the future."

Gaggi (Georges Georges)

Singer/songwriter

Gaggi is a rising talent from Sweden who likes to do things his own way. He first came onto the scene with his popular debut single "Aynatakh Koomeh" which was made available for free on his website. The single was then followed by the video clip and since then Gaggi has continued to create not only inspiring music, but also video, making him the leader when it comes to promoting Assyrian music online and digitally. Gaggi recently picked up the 'Best Video Clip' award at the Syriac Music Awards in Sweden.

For those that don’t know you, tell us who Gaggi is?

My real name is Georges and I was born in 1980 in Mosul (Iraq). I got my nickname Gaggi from my family at home when I was kid, so I kept that name (Gaggi) when I had to decide about an artist name for me as a singer. Most of the people/friends here and everywhere know me with the name (Gaggi) and I think that it´s a not a usual name as a singer name, so it would be easier to define.

I have lived in Sweden since 1995 with my lovely family (my father, my mother, my 2 brothers and my aunt) and I don´t want to forget my sister and her family.

I released my first single and music video (Aynatakh Koomeh) in 2007. After that I released two more singles "Ramsha Soodana" and "Bayat Yan Leh Bayat".

Recently (21/12/2009) I released my own CD album called "Sahdan". (available in stores and online now)

I use to sing at parties and weddings in Sweden but also in many other countries.

Now I am studying at the music college in Gothenburg to become a music teacher.

Why did you choose to become a singer?

Actually I did not choose that. The thing is that I´ve always been interested in singing, I liked listening to music a lot and I used to write the lyrics of the songs to sing them. I started playing the keyboard when I was about 11 or 12 years old in Mosul (Iraq). When I came to Sweden I kept playing the keyboard and went on stage for first time when I was 17 years old (I think), at first I was very shy to sing but little by little I noticed that I had that thing (singing) in me so I started practicing along with singing and it went well. Thank God for everything.

Who/what inspires you?

I always watch the Brasilian Ronaldo (Il Fenomeno) scoring goals and think how hard he worked to get where he is and to became the first one to be the best player in the World despite the injuries he got during his career. I always watch videos of him scoring goals before my parties to always do my best, it makes me feel great and helps me to do my best.

What’s your favorite Assyrian song of all time? (it can be one of yours or someone else’s)

Ashur Bet Sargis (Khzee Aten Dakhee Qam Shooqatlee)

What does Gaggi like to get up to in his spare time?

I like to be with my family and my friends. Sometimes I really like to practice on some new songs and sometimes sports (jogging or playing football).

Your brilliant new album is called “Sahdan”. Tell us more about it. (How long did it take you to produce, what’s your favourite song on the album etc)

About the CD (Sahdan), I want to thank God for everything and I also want to thank everyone who helped me and supported me to make this project possible.

I also want to thank all the friends who were involved in making the CD, persons like Napoleon Shimon, Hilal Mati, Ashur Simson, Saad Qlemis, Charbel Khayo, Nawfal Shamoun, Bashar Apram and everyone else. I´m very satisfied with the result of how the CD became and I´ve noticed that the people liked it a lot. I decided to make my own CD-album when I was 25 years old and now I´m 29 years old, but during the time I´ve released 3 singles along with 3 music videos.

To be honest all the songs on the album are favorites to me, otherwise I would not do/sing them and it took very long time to choose the right songs because when I do a song I have to feel the lyrics and many of the songs are real stories of my own experiences in my life.

You and quite a few Assyrian singers have released their albums digitally on iTunes and Amazon. Do you think releasing albums digitally is the way of the future for Assyrian music?

Yes, I think it´s the future for the Assyrian music but I also think that the best way to promote/sell CDs is at gigs and I really hope that the Assyrian people start to support us/singers/artists so we can produce even better work in the future.

You won the award for Best Clip for “Bayat Yan Leh Bayat” at the Syriac Music Awards earlier this year. How did winning this award make you feel?

True, it was a pleasure for me to be invited to the Syriac Music Awards and it was a great night. Winning the award gave me a great feeling of success and strength to keep up the work and to always do my best. It´s a great song written by (Napoleon Shimon) and it was a very good team work to make this video, I want to thank everyone who helped me with that and of course (Eddie Sami, Vibronia and David Thåst).

We all have a favourite Assyrian meal. What’s yours?

Yes, I have to say Dolma and Beryani

What makes you proud to be an Assyrian?

Our history and our religion

What disappoints you about being an Assyrian?

It´s that we as Assyrians don´t have our own country which could help us very much in our daily lives.

If you could invite 3 people to have dinner with, who would they be and why did you choose them?

Ronaldo (Il Fenomeno) and Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, they are three kings.

Any final words?

My final words would just be to thank God for everything and thank my great family and friends and all the fans around the world for supporting me to always do my best and to keep up this work of trying create something new and worthwhile for the Assyrian music.

Of course, I would never forget to thank you (myoomta.com) for the great work you are doing to help us as artists with promoting our music in the best way. Thank you very much

God bless
